Florists

If you have a passion for flowers and plants, and the creativity to design beautiful bouquets and arrangements, you have the starting blocks of becoming a florist. Florists will not only need the skills and education behind creating flower arrangements and other services provided to the public, but will most often run their own florist shop so will need some business know-how as well. If it is your dream to become a florist and have the experience and creativity to back you up, you can turn your dream and passion into a long-term career.

Florists have a variety of responsibilities aside from creating bouquets and arrangements; they will also be in charge of unpacking stock, ordering and hand-picking new flowers and plants, watering the plants, conditioning and pruning some flower types, creating fixed pricing on all products, attend to the customers who come in both in person, online and via email, take orders, have a clean and attractive florist shop, manage the money that comes in and out and make a variety of gift baskets and arrangements to be displayed throughout the shop which are not only available for sale but also act as décor for the shop.

If you want to become a florist, the first thing you need to do is become educated and familiar in the floral industry which includes learning about different types of flowers, how to care for them, how and where they grow, how to make beautiful arrangements and what flowers fit different personalities also helps customers choose the perfect arrangement. You will also need to learn color coordination and create both modern and traditional designs for your flower arrangements. Personally, you should have a very kind and friendly personality to be approachable as you will often be the only person working in the florist shop. It also helps to have good selling skills and customer service skills in order to help customers who are unsure about what they are looking for. Florists use a variety of tools including materials to not only make arrangements and bouquets, but other types of gifts available in the shop; some helpful materials include bouquet and gift basket wrap, scissors, tape, ribbon, balloons, flower and plant containers, and floral foams.

As a florist, you will also be learning additional crafting skills to help provide a more extensive line of products. Many customers come to florist shops not only for flowers and plants but additional gifts for their friend or loved one like gift baskets, bridal bouquets, boutonnieres, corsages, and gift wrapping services. You should become familiar with putting together artfully crafted gift baskets, learn to make different types of bows like French, butterfly and double butterfly bows, learn the craft of creating bridal bouquets, and be an expert at wrapping gifts. Another skill that may be helpful is to provide napkin folding techniques which can be displayed at special occasions like wedding receptions. You can learn these skills either online, in informational craft books, or local classes at arts and crafts stores.
